The article analyzes the life and work of one of the most prominent Ukrainian
and Russian medical scientists, a real virtuosic surgeon, philanthropist, public
figure Mykola Sklifosovsky. The research methodology is based on the principles
of historicism, comprehensiveness, objectivity and systematics. In presenting the
material, general scientific methods of analysis, synthesis, generalization, as well
as special historical (retrospective, comparative, biographical, problem-chronological)
methods were used.
The scientific novelty is an attempt to comprehensively study the little-known
pages of personal life related to Ukraine, career growth, scientific achievements,
practical experience, unique methods of treatment, surgery of patients, the use
of their own surgical developments. The role of M. Sklifosovsky in the formation
and development of military field surgery and sanitation in Ukraine and the
Russian Empire.
The main stages of his professional development, managerial activity in the
leading positions of the largest clinics, research institutes in Moscow, Kiev, St. Petersburg
are revealed.
At his own expense, the surgeon established a school, a hospital for the disabled
of the Russian-Turkish war, a pottery school and took care of the affairs of
the Poltava province.
