The article covers the early 20th-century pre-Soviet historiography of Ivan
Franko’s ethnological work within Shevchenko Scientific Society in Lviv (NTSh).
At this time, he elaborated basic approaches to assessing the scientific heritage
from ethnographic and folkloristic viewpoints. The literature does not always
evaluate Franko’s general work and scientific achievement in NTSh properly. Further
historical events led to the formation of several historiographical schools of
reading Franko. His heritage and historiographical resources provide ground to
view him as also an ethnologist.
