У статті висвітлюється становлення профільної освіти у загальноосвітній школі сучасної України.

This article provides an overview of the profession-oriented teaching in the general high school. The author sees this process as stimulated by emerging competition of youth on a labor market. The standards and legal base for professional orientation in high schools were set by the Law “On General High Education”, the National doctrine for development of education and directly by the Concept of Subject-Oriented Instruction. The latter document elaborates basic principles of subject-profiling in high school and specifies training profiles (social and humanities, mathematical, art and esthetic, sports). The author indicates that profile education isn’t new to this education system and provides a historical overview of profile training (classical and real gymnasium of ХІХ century, labor schools in Soviet period). On the basis of statistical data about the process of the initial stage of introduction of profile training in high schools, its further prospects and problems are analyzed.
